Carving out Family Time with Claire Lerner

We talk with Claire Lerner about how computers are invading our families and how to set some guidelines to make sure we spend enough time interacting with more than just our virtual family members.  This show is filled with great ideas on how to deal with the onslaught of media coming at our precious family time.

  1. Great show everyone, I really enjoyed it.

I thought you might be interested in a book called The Winter of our Disconnect http://www.randomhouse.com.au/Books/Default.aspx?Page=Book&ID=9781741669640 by Susan Maushart. She’s a journalist from Perth i n Western Australia (originally American, though) and she decided that her family of herself and three teenagers were going to go ‘screen free’ for six months. No tv, no internet at home, no smart phones, no iPods.

And they did it! They found that any online component of homework could be easily completed at either the school, local or university library, and anything else was non-essential.

You can actually get it as a podcast if you go to http://www.abc.net.au/rn/firstperson/ and look up The Winter of our Disconnect. It aired a couple of weeks ago.
