What New Moms REALLY Need

Shelly has been writing down the things that new moms REALLY need to share with her daughters.  We discuss what she found out and how you can really help the new moms you know (since you probably forgot what it is really like).

  1. I just listened to this podcast earlier this afternoon and I thought I just HAD to add a few of my own ideas to the list!

When my daughter was born, she spent two weeks in the NICU, which presented a number of challenges that I could never have imagined. Obviously having a baby stay in the NICU was difficult, but the most difficult consequence of her NICU stay was that it presented some extreme difficulty breastfeeding. So, I would say that new moms really need to know that breastfeeding is TOUGH work. But, I think we really need to start telling new moms that although we all know that “breast is best,” if it’s not working for you and your baby, then it’s OK to choose to do something else. At the end of the day, nothing in the new world of parenting is worth doing if it’s causing you and your family stress. So, use all the resources you have available to you to make breastfeeding work, if that’s what you’d like to do. But at the end of the day, if it’s not working, don’t fill yourself with guilt. Instead, change what you’re doing and then focus your energy on all the other amazing moments with your baby.
